Ingredients

  • 1 cup flour
  • 2 tablespoons onion powder
  • 2 tablespoons paprika
  • 1 tablespoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon celery seed
  • 1 tablespoon dried basil
  • 1 tablespoon dried parsley
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper

Instructions

  • It’s super easy to make this herb and spice blend. In a medium bowl, mix to combine all ingredients.
  • Store in an airtight container until ready to use in your favorite recipes. The seasonings should last several months if stored properly.
  • When making stew, use 2 to 3 tablespoons of this mixture per pound of stew meat. Toss the meat in the mixture before browning the meat, then proceed with your favorite beef stew recipe.

Notes

  • The key to a great seasoning blend is starting with high-quality dried herbs.
  • You will notice that there is no garlic powder in this recipe. That is because I like to add fresh garlic to my beef stew; however, you can add 2 tablespoons of garlic powder with the other ingredients.
  • Adjust the salt to your tastes.
  • Not enough ground black pepper for your tastes? Add up to a tablespoon more to the basic recipe.
  • If you prefer a finer texture that evenly distributes throughout your dishes, consider giving the herbs a quick pulse in a spice grinder or mortar and pestle. This is especially helpful if your blend contains larger herbs like rosemary.
  • Store your seasoning in an airtight container or jar, preferably in a cool, dark place, to keep it fresh for months. Glass jars work well, and you can even repurpose small spice jars for this purpose.
  • To keep track of freshness, always label your container with the name of the blend and the date you made it. While dried herbs don’t spoil, they do lose potency over time. Using them within six months will give you the best flavor.
