It’s been one hot summer thus far and it’s not even officially summer yet!  Staying hydrated isn’t easy when it’s constantly over 100 degrees every day, but drinking this Sparkling Hibiscus Iced Tea does help!

Today is my birthday and this refreshing iced tea is one of my favorites to enjoy while relaxing today.  It is also National Iced Tea Month! A few of my blogger friends from #FestiveFoodies have gotten together to share our favorite iced tea recipes.  You can check them out at the bottom of this post.

About a year ago I started drinking hibiscus iced tea – unsweetened – and I love it!  Now, drinking this tea unsweetened isn’t usually the popular way to comsume it, it’s rather tart.  Sweetening it with sugar or honey would be great for those who love drinking sweet teas.

Hibiscus tea is a dried flower that is ruby red or deep magenta in color with a tart taste, caffeine-free, and full of health benefits.  Many people who drink this tea will sweeten it and one popular way is to add spices like ginger to give the tea balance.  Drinking hibiscus tea can lower blood pressure since it is a natural diuretic.  Some studies have shown that drinking hibiscus tea can raise cholesterol HDL levels, the “good” cholesterol levels.  Other benefits of drinking this delicious tea include improving mood, aiding in weight loss, boosting immunity, and a few others.

You can drink hibiscus tea hot or cold. I prefer it chilled over ice and unsweetened.

Tips for this Recipe:

Let’s get to the recipe!  If you can’t find hibiscus tea bags in your grocery store, you can buy them online from many of your favorite grocers.  I usually find it at Walmart.  I use the family size tea bags for this recipe, but you can use about 6 or 7 regular hibiscus tea bags.

The amount of honey used to sweeten this iced tea can range from 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup.  I would start with the lesser amount and taste test. Hint: the honey will dissolve much better when the tea is hot, so add more honey at that point.

I garnished the drink with strawberries but you can also use a lemon slice.  You can also add sliced fruit to the tea.

I use a one gallon pitcher that I fill with ice. Once the water is boiling for the tea, I pour 4 cups of water into a 4 cup measuring cup with one family size hibiscus tea bag. Let it steep for 5 minutes.

Once the tea has steeped, remove the tea bag and add the honey.  Stir to dissolve and do your taste test. Once the tea is to your desired sweetness, pour the tea over the ice , add sparkling water, and give it a stir.  Chill for about an hour before serving.
