Air Fryer Kale Chips

You are in for a treat this week on the blog and with my blogger friends from #FestiveFoodies.  It’s #FarmersMarketWeek and we’re bring you the best recipes to make from everything you can find there! I’ll be posting Monday, Wednesday, and Friday with three yummy recipes and at the end of the posts you will find more Farmers Market recipes to save.  You can also follow the hashtag on social media to catch others you may miss.

I’m going to tell you upfront, I am not a kale person.  I cannot eat it unless it’s in a dish with other ingredients.  Salads, soups, etc are all great with kale in them – but hand me a plate of it by itself, cooked or raw and I will hand it right back to you.

That being said, I really do like kale chips! I like them even more now that I can make them at home and season them with anything I am craving.  Making them in the air fryer really isn’t a time saver, but it does cut down on the amount of oil you would use to make the chips and they do get just as crispy as they would in the oven.

I have a small air fryer so I had to make a few batches versus if you have a larger one or use the oven.  One con using the air fryer is that the kale leaves blow around while baking – this is easily fixed with an air fryer rack on top of the leaves.  I don’t have one, so I simply checked to make sure no leaves blew up inside the heating element from time to time.  They are only air frying for a few minutes.

My fresh kale leaves came from my biweekly Misfit Market box of fresh organic fruits and vegetables. I totally love this service and it’s been great to receive foods to try that I may not have otherwise purchased.  Plus, if there is anything in there that we do not eat, I just send it my neighbors way.  They love that.  Check site out.

How to Make Kale Chips in the Air Fryer

Making kale chips in the air fryer couldn’t be easier using this small appliance.  It’s the best way to make this healthy snack without heating up the oven.

Fresh Kale from Farmer's Market

Using Fresh Kale:  Start by cutting the leaves of the kale from the stalks.  I just slice each side of the leaves down the stalk to remove them.  Rinse them off to remove any dirt or grit.  Dry well with paper towels. Tear or cut

Alternatively, you can buy a bag of fresh kale already torn into large pieces.

Lay the torn kale leaves on a baking sheet:  spray lightly with nonstick spray and then lightly season the leaves with whatever seasoning you would like. I like garlic salt and onion powder but a taco seasoning is great as well.  Flip the leaves over repeat with the spray and seasonings.

Once you have them seasoned, place a single layer of leaves in the basket of the air fryer.  Set the fryer on 375 degrees and let cook for 3 minutes, and then turn them over and let cook for another 3 minutes or until crispy.  If you have a air fryer rack, place it over the leaves to keep them from blowing around.  If not, simply check a couple of times to make sure no kale chip has blown up into the heating element.  It’s not a pretty smell if that happens!
