Cheeseburger Hobo Dinner Packets
Cheeseburger Hobo Dinner Packets are a delicious twist on the traditional hobo dinner. A foil packet full of potatoes, carrots, onions, and a seasoned homemade cheeseburger makes for an easy meal.
If I can make dinner in one pan, pot, or casserole dish, I am a happy girl. Even happier when I can make foil pack dinners because there is NO pan or pot to wash. You can even eat out of foil packet. We love these burger dinners and these steak fajita foil packs, too.
Another reason I love making foil pack dinners is that you can customize each packet for each person you are making them for. Easy recipes win every time.
Cheeseburger Hobo Dinner Packets
Cheeseburger hobo dinner packets are super easy to assemble and cook. These tin foil dinners are great to take camping as well. You can make the hamburger patties and prep all the vegetables but the potatoes before you go camping. Store them in containers and then when ready, dice up the potatoes and assemble the foil packs.
Ingredient List
- hamburger
- carrots
- baby potatoes
- onions
- egg
- cheese
- heavy duty aluminum foil (I use this one)
Assembling the foil packets
Prep your vegetables. I used baby carrots that I cut in half, small red potatoes cut in half or quarters, and chopped a medium onion. Set aside.
In a medium bowl, combine the ground beef, egg, garlic powder, salt and pepper, and mix together. Make 8 patties, set aside.
Tear off 8 sheets of heavy duty foil (about 12″ x 18″). I like to stack the sheets and do one packet at a time. Spray the first sheet of foil with non-stick cooking spray. Place about 1/8 of the potatoes, carrots, and onions in the center of foil. Season vegetables with salt and pepper.
Top with a hamburger patty.
Seal up the packets and place on a tray. REPEAT these steps for the remaining 7 packets.
How to cook the foil packets
Keep in mind that your cooking time may vary depending on how much or little you have in your packets.
Oven: Foil packets are easy to cook in the oven. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Place the hobo dinner foil packets on a rimmed baking sheet and cook for 45 minutes or until vegetables are tender and the ground beef reaches an internal temperature of 160 degrees when testing with a meat thermometer . I like to to turn the packs halfway through.
Over the Fire/Camping: Place packets right over the coals. Avoid flames for they will burn through the packet. This will take 30 to 45 minutes depending on the size of the packet.
On the Grill: Grill for 35-45 minutes or until potatoes and carrots are tender and the ground beef reaches 160 degrees. I flipped mine over during the last 20 minutes of cooking.
**With any of the methods, during the last 5 minutes of cooking time, open packets and add the cheese to the burgers. Allow cheese to melt with the foil open, and then serve.
As you can see one of the packets has all potatoes and pepperjack cheese. I had one person who doesn’t care for carrots and asked for spicy cheese.
