These Cheesy Sloppy Joes on English Muffins are the perfect use for the leftover sloppy joe meat mixture. I don’t know about you, but these days I am finding easy meals to make with whatever I have in the pantry and freezer.  Getting creative with meals to keep them not becoming boring or “the same ole thing” can be trying, but it can also be fun. 

Organizing the pantry helps me to see what I have and from there, it’s anybody’s guess what will be made.  I found a can of sloppy Joe sauce and decided to use it to make these Ground beef sloppy Joes on English muffins that we had.  I usually make my slow cooker homemade sloppy Joe recipe but since I had the can of sauce to use, I went that route.

Cheesy Sloppy Joes

Sloppy Joes are a classic American comfort food that has been a favorite in many households for generations. It can be called by a few different names depending on the region you live. Growing up we called them steamers or sloppy Joes. To make these open-faced sandwiches top toasted English muffins with the saucy meat mixture and add shredded cheese. Set under the broiler to melt the cheese. Serve with side of roasted veggies, a side salad, or as we like to do, these air fryer onion rings.

Timesaving Tips and Variations

  • Substitute the ground beef for ground turkey, ground chicken, or plant-based ground meat.
  • Use your favorite shredded cheese.
  • Spice it up with a diced jalapeno pepper in the sauce.
  • You can serve it over baked biscuits or toasted bread slices in place of the English muffins.

📃Ingredients

  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 bell pepper, diced (I had some already diced that were a variety of colors, use what you have)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (15 ounces) Manwich sauce
  • 4 English muffins, split
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar jack cheese
  • salt and pepper, to taste

Directions

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. In a large skillet, brown ground beef on the stovetop. Add garlic, onion, and bell peppers when the meat is just about done. Cook until the vegetables are soft. Drain the grease from the pan but do not rinse. Return the skillet to the stove and add the can of Manwich and season with salt and pepper, to taste.

 Allow the meat mixture to simmer while you are preparing the English muffins.

 Place the English muffins on a sheet pan and toast them in the oven for a few minutes, turning them over once.  Remove from oven and then turn the broiler on to preheat.

Top each English muffin half with Sloppy Joe mixture and then with cheese.  Place in broiler long enough to melt the cheese, about 5 minutes. Watch them carefully as they can go from perfectly melted to a burnt mess fast.

    I love this idea. I’m sort of kicking myself in the butt that I’ve used English muffins for years for pizza but never of using them for sloppy joes. It’s perfect because I hate how mushy the buns get when I do make them. Great idea!

    1. Yes! I learned years ago to toast those muffins or rolls before making pizza burgers or these sloppy Joe ones. Make a difference!!
