Creole spice mix is a blend of herbs and spices considered to be the basis of Cajun and Creole cooking. Creating your own homemade seasoning recipes will not only save you money but also allow you to control the level of salt and spice to suit your taste preferences.
Store-bought seasoning blends can’t compare to making your homemade spice blends. You get a freshness and an incredible potency with homemade mixes that you can’t with ones from the store. This Creole Seasoning Mix is similar to my Homemade Cajun Seasoning with a few different herbs added. Both can be interchanged in most Creole and Cajun recipes. I’ve made this Cajun Red Beans and Rice Skillet with both seasoning blends and it’s tasty either way. I do love this One Pan Shrimp and Sausage Vegetable meal with the Creole seasoning.

The ingredients in this New Orleans seasoning are typically pantry staples that probably have already. Spices you may already have are dried herbs like oregano and basil or seasonings like garlic powder and ground black pepper are common to have on hand. While cayenne pepper and white pepper may be ones you have to grab at the store.
The key ingredients include spices (black pepper, white pepper, paprika, and cayenne), herbs (oregano, thyme, basil, and parsley), and aromatics (onion powder and garlic powder). Adding salt is optional.
With this make-it-yourself seasoning recipe, you’ll have a flavorful and convenient way to add a taste of Creole cuisine to your everyday cooking.
Timesaving Tips and Variations
- Check the expiration date of your spices and herbs. You want to make sure you have the freshest ingredients.
- Store homemade spices in an airtight container like these spice jars. Keep them in a cool dark place.
- If your spices are in a clump, they are still good! You can pour the contents into a bowl and mash the lumps with a whisk or use a small food processor to blend again.
- The cayenne pepper can be adjusted to suit your heat level.
- I have not included salt in this recipe. Most of the time I omit it as I can add salt to my foods but I can’t take it out. Feel free to add it to your tastes.
- In place of the herbs, you can use Italian seasoning.
When possible, it’s best to use high-quality spices and herbs for any seasoning blend you want to make.
What’s the difference between Creole Seasoning and Cajun Seasoning?
You may be wondering what the difference between Creole and Cajun seasonings and it’s an easy answer. Both seasonings mixes are very similar and it just boils down to where you live, what they call it there, and the herbs and spices used. If you are from Louisiana then you most likely use the term Creole. Outside of that state, most people tend to use the term Cajun. Creole seasoning tends to have more herbs than Cajun.
