Homemade Shamrock Shake Recipe
Making your own Homemade Shamrock Shake is super easy and you can make it year-round! This popular green shake recipe is creamy, minty, and ready in five minutes.
Are you a fan of the McDonald’s Shamrock Shake when it makes an appearance near St. Patrick’s Day? I sure am but I rarely go the fast-food restaurant anymore. Making my own homemade minty milkshake at home means I can have it any time of the year! This copycat recipe has simple ingredients and several fun garnishes.
Creating the shamrock shake at home is super easy and while the recipe only makes one shake, it’s so easy to double it and make more. Since I am the only one who loves mint drinks and foods, this recipe is perfect. Plus, whipping it up in the blender takes less time than driving to the restaurant, ordering, and waiting.
Homemade Shamrock Shake
The copycat shamrock shake recipe is perfect for a St. Patrick’s Day dessert after feasting on corned beef and cabbage.
Because it’s a quick recipe, dessert doesn’t have to wait for hours or be made earlier in the day. But, I’m not opposed to making this Grasshopper Poke Cake to have with my mint milkshake!
Whether you top your shakes with whipped cream and a cherry, or drizzle chocolate (mint and chocolate, yes please!) and add sprinkles to the whipped topping, it’s a winner of a shake! Minty, frosty, creamy goodness made by you!
What Is A Shamrock Shake?
A Shamrock Shake is a mint flavored, green colored shake that has been an iconic drink at McDonald’s restaurants for over 50 years. Customers wait all year for Shamrock Shake to appear on the menu for a limited time around St. Patrick’s Day! I don’t have to wait anymore, since I can enjoy this any time of year, at home. You can, too!
What’s in the Shamrock Shake?
While McDonald’s recipe uses their soft serve ice cream and Shamrock shake syrup (with a list of ingredients in that), this homemade festive shake uses simple vanilla ice cream, milk, mint extract, and a couple of green food coloring drops. Of course, the garnishes such as the drizzle of chocolate syrup, whipped cream topping, and sprinkles are all optional.

Which do you use, peppermint or mint in this shake recipe?
I prefer to use the natural flavor of mint extract, as it has subtle hints of spearmint, whereas peppermint extract has a stronger taste. Mint is preferred in this recipe.

- ¼ teaspoon mint extract
- 4 drops of green food coloring
- Chocolate syrup, for drizzling (optional)

- blender
How to make this homemade shamrock shake recipe
