The Best Bread to Use to Make French Toast

How to make French toast easy starts with the bread of course. You can use just about any bread you like but day-old bread or slightly stale bread works the best. It soaks up the batter better without making the French toast soggy once it’s cooked. While Texas Toast, Brioche bread, and Challah bread are all delicious when used for French toast, using a loaf of sliced sandwich bread is great, too. On the upside, I always have a loaf of bread in the house so it’s easy to make this recipe. If you need gluten-free bread, there are options for that too.

Thick slices of bread work very well so when I use regular sliced bread, I don’t soak the bread in the egg mixture very much. Just dip to coat, flip, and place on the griddle or in the skillet. If the bread is thick, like Texas toast, then a few more seconds in the batter works great. Adjust the “soak” time accordingly with how thick your bread is sliced.

Milk Substitutions

I use either whole milk or 2% milk when I make French toast. Alternatively, half and half cream can be used. You can even use heavy cream, almond, or coconut milk. The different milks you may use can change the flavor slightly but will result in delicious French toast. In a pinch, I’ve used French vanilla coffee creamer and it was so good.

Variations

The basic French toast recipe is just that – a base for you to go by. Get creative! Add a little cinnamon as I did in this Cinnamon French Toast. A pinch of cardamom with cinnamon gives the French toast that “wow, what is in here” factor of goodness. Add a bit of orange zest to the batter to change the flavor up, trust me, it’s good! If you want a decadent breakfast, try Cream Cheese Stuffed French Toast.

What Toppings Go On French Toast

This list isn’t inclusive but it’s a good place to start. Our favorite toppings are fresh strawberries or blueberries with warm real maple syrup drizzled over a stack of French toast slices.

  • Maple syrup
  • Pancake syrup
  • Butter
  • Dusting of powdered sugar
  • Caramel sauce
  • Chocolate sauce
  • Fresh fruit like fresh berries and banana
  • Any fruit jam (these strawberry preserves are great)
  • Whipped cream
  • Peanut butter
  • Nutella
  • Candied pecans
  • Granola
  • Bacon or sausage

Pro tip: If you’re cooking a large batch of French toast, you can keep the cooked slices warm in a 200 degree oven for up to 30 minutes. Place a wire rack on a large baking sheet and place the French toast slices on the rack. Be sure not to leave it in the oven for too long or it will dry out.

How to Store and Reheat

Leftover slices can be stored in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 2 days. You can reheat on a hot griddle, or hot skillet, or place French toast slices in the toaster and toast! Reheat also in the Air Fryer. I do not recommend using the microwave to reheat the slices as they will become soggy.

Can you Freeze French Toast?

Yes, you can freeze cooked French toast by arranging the slices in a single layer on a baking sheet to freeze, and then transfer to a freezer bag and freeze for up to two months. Thaw and reheat as above.
