It’s easy to make Cinnamon French Toast and you only need a few basic ingredients. Thick-cut slices of Texas toast dipped in a cinnamon-flavored custard and then cooked to perfection. For a delicious breakfast, serve with warm maple syrup, butter, and fresh fruit.
My husband makes the most delicious Cinnamon French Toast and it’s not even anything complicated. The recipe is easy and uses ingredients we always have in the house. I think it’s the amount of cinnamon he uses plus the small amount of milk in the custard batter that makes it taste so amazing. He doesn’t make it nearly enough, in my opinion. I may have to request it again, like tomorrow.

Cinnamon French Toast
Cinnamon French Toast is such a classic breakfast and it’s easy to make not to mention quick. This recipe uses simple ingredients like milk, eggs, and cinnamon. While we like to use Texas toast for the bread, we’ve also enjoyed French toast using Broiche or a simple loaf of regular sandwich bread. In a pinch, English muffins make delicious French toast, too. Whatever bread you use, day-old bread is better than using fresh bread. It will hold up in the batter better and cook up firmer.
I found that using butter to cook the slices of French toast gives it such buttery richness over using oil or nonstick cooking spray. It just makes it even better.
Cinnamon French Toast is perfect for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Serve it with warm maple syrup and crisp bacon slices, or this delicious biscuits and sausage gravy casserole and this strawberry pink peppercorn smoothie.
Toppings for French Toast
- Fruit such as strawberries, bananas, or blueberries
- Your favorite jams or jellies
- Cranberry sauce (this one is great to use up the leftover sauce from the holidays)
- Peanut butter or Nutella
- Whipped cream
- Maple Syrup
- Chocolate chips or chocolate sauce
- Peanut butter chips
Feeding a crowd?
French toast is easy to serve to a crowd. You can either serve as you cook the French toast or place each cooked slice on a baking sheet with a wire rack in a 200°F oven to keep them all warm until you’re ready to serve.
How to Freeze French Toast
Place the cooked French toast on a wire cooking rack to cool completely. Once it has cooled to room temperature, place the tray in the freezer to “flash-freeze” the slices. Once frozen, transfer slices to a freezer-safe zip-top bag and place in the freezer. Frozen French toast can last up to 2 months if stored properly. To reheat, place the French toast in the microwave for 20 to 30 seconds. Flip and heat for an additional 15 to 20 seconds. I’ve even heated the slices up in the toaster or toaster oven.
Equipment
- Shallow bowl, wide enough to dip bread in
- Fork or whisk
- Square griddle or large skillet
Ingredients
- 2 – 3 tablespoons butter
- 8 sliced Texas Toast
- ⅔ cup milk
- 1 tsp cinnamon, more as needed
- warm maple syrup
How to Make Cinnamon French Toast
Step 1
Heat a square griddle or regular skillet over medium heat.
Step 2
In a shallow bowl that is wide enough to hold a slice of bread, add eggs, milk, and cinnamon and whisk until completely combined. It’s okay if the cinnamon isn’t totally incorporated into the mixture. This just means more cinnamon goodness.
Step 3
Melt one tablespoon of butter on the hot skillet or griddle.
Step 4
Dip each side of the bread slices into the egg mixture and add to the griddle or skillet. My husband will add more cinnamon to the batter halfway through making the French toast. Note: Only dip the bread into the egg mixture long enough to coat. The longer the bread sits in the egg mixture the longer it will take to cook, and you risk the center not getting cooked all the way.
Step 5
Cook for 3-5 minutes, until golden brown, then flip and cook the other side for 2-3 minutes. You want to be sure the toast is cooked through. No one likes soggy French toast. Repeat with more slices of bread as needed, using more butter on the griddle if the bread starts to stick.
Step 6
Serve with additional butter, maple syrup, and fresh sliced strawberries, if desired.
Tips, Tricks, and FAQs
- While Texas toast is used, any of your favorite bread will work. Brioche, sourdough, French bread are all great choices.
- Any type of milk can be used, even plant-based like almond, oat, or soy.
- Replace the milk with heavy cream or half and half for a creamier richer custard batter.
- Add a dash or two of vanilla extract to the batter.
- A light dusting of powdered sugar sprinkled over cooked French toast gives the dish an extra bit of delicious sweetness.
- Be sure your griddle is hot and you allow the French toast to cook completely on both sides.
- Make French toast sticks by slicing the bread into strips before dunking them into the custard mixture, then cook. Or, slice the toast when it’s finished cooking. Kids love to dunk French toast sticks into syrup.
