The best thing about homemade seasoning recipes is that they all are customizable. I don’t care for my foods to be too spicy but the spice level for some other family members is off the charts. This spice blend can be adjusted for everyone’s heat level plus it’s great to use on more than beef – try it on chicken, fish, and vegetables, too.

Making your own seasonings allows you to control the ingredients, adjust the flavors to your preference, and avoid preservatives and excess sodium. Plus, it’s incredibly easy and quick to prepare, and you can make a large batch to have on hand for multiple meals.

I’ll be honest, out of all my seasoning blends, this Steak Taco Seasoning mix is my favorite and the most used. The recipe is incredibly easy to make. With just a few simple ingredients, you can have a jar of spices that are perfect to season Steak Street Tacos or these Sheet Pan Steak Fajitas. I’ve even used it in our usual tacos and also in this Taco Chicken in the Crock Pot. Having a jar of this spice blend in the pantry at all times is a must.

Homemade Steak Taco Seasoning

This is such an easy spice blend to make and its rich and bold flavors will elevate your tacos to the next level. The mix of spices used is commonly found in most kitchen pantries. Spices like chili powder, cumin, and garlic powder are staples when creating your seasoning mixes. This recipe uses those and a few others to create the best Tex-Mex spice mix. This seasoning blend can also be used in marinades to make Carne Asada and other recipes like Slow Cooker Shredded Beef Fajitas, a favorite here.

A little note about the salt in this recipe, I normally use an amount on the lesser side that is listed. It’s a personal choice and that’s the beauty of DIY seasoning recipes, you control the amount of each ingredient to suit your tastes and dietary preferences. You can even omit the salt and just add it to taste.

Timesaving Tips and Variations

  • I like to double the recipe and store it in a mason jar. I like to use small mason jars to store my homemade spice and seasoning blends. I also love to Re-purpose Starbucks bottles for my spices.
  • Store your seasoning in an airtight container, preferably in a cool, dark place, to keep it fresh for months. Glass jars work well, and you can even repurpose small spice jars for this purpose.
  • Check the expiration date of your spices and herbs. You want to make sure you have the freshest ingredients.
  • Always label your container with the name of the blend and the date you made it.
  • The list of ingredients is to my tastes, but if you prefer it less spicy or more adjust the spices as needed.
  • You can also control the amount of salt used.
  • This seasoning mix is also great to use in place of your favorite store-bought Mexican seasoning blend.

It’s best to use good-quality spices and herbs for any seasoning blend you want to make. Buy seasonings in bulk when they are on sale or when you are making several homemade mixes at once.

  • If you’re using the spicy beef taco spice mix for steak use 3 – 4 tablespoons of seasoning and rub it all over the steak before grilling, or your preferred cooking method and per your recipe.
  • For ground beef, use 3 – 4 tablespoons per 1 pound of ground beef. A store-bought taco seasoning mix has about 3 tablespoons in it.
  • For chicken, the same amounts as for steak can be used for a dry rub before grilling or baking the poultry.
  • Using it as a marinade: For 1 pound of meat, combine 3 – 4 tablespoons of seasoning mix with 2 – 3 tablespoons of olive oil in a ziplock bag. Add 1 pound of beef, chicken, or pork. Marinate for at least 30 minutes to overnight. Cook per your recipe.
  • For vegetables: this spice blend is great to sprinkle over fresh vegetables, toss with a little olive oil, and then roast in the oven.
