Timesaving Tips and Variations

This Italian deli salad is already quick to make, but a few small changes or substitutions can always be welcomed. Here are some of my favorite tips to save time and customize the dish:

  • Use pre-washed, bagged romaine lettuce
  • Substitute store-bought Italian dressing in a pinch
  • Swap cherry tomatoes for grape tomatoes; no slicing needed
  • Buy pre-sliced salami and pre-shredded mozzarella
  • Use jarred banana peppers and pre-sliced olives
  • Prep and store chopped veggies up to 2 days in advance
  • Make the dressing in bulk and refrigerate for up to a week
  • Add canned chickpeas or rotisserie chicken for a quick protein boost

These shortcuts can cut prep time in half and make the salad even more convenient for busy days. Swapping ingredients also makes it easy to adjust for dietary needs or what’s in your fridge.

I prepare Italian Salad often as it is colourful, filling and healthy too. Though I don’t add any meat, but with mozzarella it tends to be filling.
