I hadn’t intended on doing another blog post this week as I am studying for exams and writing a few research papers but when Jaimie from Brilliant Earth asked me to participate in their Create a Little Love Campaign, I said yes! By the way, Brilliant Earth sells jewelry…among the beautiful pieces there are diamonds and not just any diamonds but ethically sourced diamonds. Check them out when you get a chance. I have my eye on a pair of sapphire earrings I saw. I may have to cuddle up to my husband with the website open on the computer to see if anything peaks his interest. A girl can dream, can’t she?!

Valentine’s Day is tomorrow and with that brings another special day for my husband and me. Today is the anniversary of our first date 33 years ago at the local skating rink. Throughout the years since then we’ve given each other various Valentine’s Day gifts and some years we are content with dinner and a movie out or a nice dinner and dessert at home instead of an actual gift exchange. But no matter what we do, that week we always test each other to see if we remembered what they day before Cupid’s big event is. Luckily for him, he remembers!

This year we’re going to see the play, Our Town, at the local little theater and to celebrate that first date, I made him a batch his favorite Frosted Sugar Cookies Valentine’s style and he brought home roses for me. Love can mean many things and come in different forms and to me, it’s the little things we do with and for each other that means the most.

Below is the recipe for the Sugar Cookies, which is my standard all-holiday sugar cookie dough. Why find another when you found perfection! I’ve used it for about 20 years and it never fails. These cookies have been made for so many holidays and occasions such as Christmas, Halloween, birthdays, and they even go in care packages I send to my daughter in college.

Why not create a little love of your own and bake the cookies for someone special?

Cookie Dough:

  • 3 3/4 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 cup butter not margarine
  • 1 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 2 eggs

Powdered Sugar Frosting

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tbsp milk
  • 1 tsp clear vanilla optional
  • food coloring optional

Cookie Dough:

  • Cream butter, sugar till creamy. Add eggs one at a time, beat well each time. With last egg add vanilla.
  • Combine in a bowl, the flour, salt, baking powder and whisk to get any lumps out.
  • Add dry ingredients slowly to butter and sugar mixture. Blend well.
  • Chill one hour or longer (I usually do one hour. You can freeze the dough as well to use at a later time)
  • Roll out onto floured board, the thicker the dough the softer the cookie.
  • Cut out as desired and bake on slightly greased pan 8-10 min at 375 degrees. Decorate as desired.

Powdered Sugar Frosting

  • Combine sugar, milk and vanilla and blend well. Stir in enough additional milk, 1 tsp at a time till icing is smooth and the consistency you would like.
  • Add drops of food coloring to tint, if desired.
  • If you are using it as white icing as I do on the cookies, use clear vanilla extract as it will keep your frosting white.
  • You may have to play with the amount of milk to get it to the right consistency for icing cookies.
