These Valentine’s Day Frosted Sugar Cookies make me smile with their sprinkles and how soft and chewy they are. I altered my normal sugar cookie recipe just a bit to make these and I was not disappointed. I was a bit worried that the family would not like them since the recipe I have been using for over 20 years is loved by so many. No worries, they loved them, too.

I did use a frosting shortcut with store-bought frosting, but it’s okay. Sometimes those time-saving items come in handy. Use festive sprinkles or colored sugar to decorate the cookies. This would be a wonderful recipe for the kids to help make. They can roll out the dough and cut out the cookies using heart shaped cookie cutters, frost and decorate as they please.

While my normal sugar cookie recipe does require a bit of chill time, this one does not. However, if the dough becomes too soft and warm, you may want to chill it for 15 minutes between batches.

If you prefer not to frost some of the cookies, you can add colored sugar crystals to the cut outs before baking them. Get creative with your decorating!

Transform Store-Bought Frosting into Royal Icing

Simply remove the lid and aluminum seal. Place in the microwave for 1 minute. Stir well. Transfer to a piping bag and use as desired. Allow the icing to dry completely before stacking. Using parchment or waxed paper between each layer is recommended.

How thick do I roll sugar cookies?

Roll out the cookie dough to about 1/4 inch thick or justa tad under 1/4 inch thick. This is on the thicker side, but doing so produces extra thick and soft cookies.

Can I make the dough ahead?

Yes! Make the dough ahead of time (no more 3 days in advance), wrap in plastic wrap and store in refrigerator. Before rolling and cutting the dough into shapes, let the dough soften a little so that it doesn’t crumble and to make it easier to roll out. If the dough gets too soft, slide it back in the freezer for a few minutes to let it firm up a little more again before continuing.
