Kiwano and Blood Orange Smoothies served in a kiwano melon shell

This is the final Friday for our #FreakyFruitsFriday event hosted by Camilla of Culinary Adventures with Camilla and sponsored by Melissa’s Produce.  I had only heard of a few of the fruits that were sent to me and the others had me doing some research to see what they were all about.  The Freaky Fruits really aren’t freaky as much as they are very cool-looking fruits.

In our boxes we received Kiwano Horned Melons, Passion Fruits, Cherimoya, Rambutans, Dragonfruits, Pomegranates, Strawberry Papayas, Blood Oranges, and Chayote Squash.  How many of them have you heard of or tried?

At the end of this post, you will find the recipes linked up today for the event.  They are GOOD! You can also search the #FreakyFruitsFriday hashtag on social media.  Also, be sure to follow the #FreakyFruitsFriday Pinterest board.

For my final recipe, I made a delicious smoothie using the Kiwano Horned Melon and Blood Oranges as well as a few other fruits.  Adding coconut milk yogurt to the smoothie made it even better.  If you never tried Kiwano melon, you should.

Kiwano melons are known for their spiky, golden-orange shell with a emerald green inside that’s filled with edible seeds. The flavor of the fruit is a blend of cucumber, melons, and a hint of lime. Perfect for smoothies.

To eat the melon, simply cut in half and scoop out the seeded flesh, which is what I did so that I could use the shell of the melon as a unique serving cup. The fruit can be use in recipes for salads, salsas, and smoothies.

Tips to Make Kiwano and Blood Orange Smoothies:

This smoothie is super simple to make and the recipe makes enough for one or two servings. The first thing you would do is to juice the blood oranges into your blender.

Then cut your kiwano melon in half and scoop out the flesh and seeds into the blender. Continue adding the rest of the ingredients to the blender.  Blend until smooth and taste to see if you need to add a bit of sweetener, but if you do, simply add a tablespoon of raw honey and blend again.

If your smoothie is too thick, you can blend in a couple of ice cubes.

I used the kiwano melon as my drinking “glass” but cutting off the top of one and scooping out all of the fruit and seeds (I used this to make more smoothies). I dried the inside a little with a paper towel and then poured my smoothie in the fruit shell. If your melon doesn’t stand up, use a knife to slice off a thin piece of the bottom. Garnish with a straw and slice of blood orange.
