Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Easy prep and baking time is just 30 minutes,
  • The little apple tarts are fun to eat and so yummy.
  • Individual desserts are great for dessert tables and potlucks.

Puff Pastry Apple Roses

Apples are abundant in the Fall and these dessert roses made using fresh red apples and puff pastry are the perfect way to celebrate the season. They taste amazing and look so stunning that the dessert apple roses are also perfect for holidays and special occasions such as Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, or any event you need to bring a dessert to.

The puff pastry makes a flaky crisp crust for these tender cinnamon-sugared apples and from start to finish it takes about 45 minutes to make. The apple roses are baked for about 30 minutes until golden brown and the apples are tender. They can be eaten as is but make them even more elegant by dusting them with powdered sugar. Of course, you can serve a scoop of vanilla ice cream or caramel sauce along the side of the apple pastries.

How to Make Puff Pastry Apple Roses

Step 1

If you haven’t taken your puff pastry dough out of the freezer, do so now. It will take about 30 minutes on the counter to thaw to room temperature. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and prepare a muffin tray with nonstick spray.

Step 2

Wash the apples, cut them in half lengthwise, and remove the core. Use a sharp knife or mandoline. Slice the apples thinly widthwise, keeping the open side of the apple down. You want paper thin slices (cut into ⅛ – inch slices). Note: if you are using a mandoline, please be careful as the gadgets are super sharp.

Step 3

Put the thinly sliced apples in a medium bowl and add the juice of half a lemon. Gently toss the apples in the lemon juice, taking care not to break any of the slices.

Step 4

In a small bowl, add 1-2 teaspoons of sugar and a small pinch of cinnamon to the apples and gently mix until well combined. Set aside the remaining sugar and cinnamon.

Step 5

Melt the butter and brush it onto one side of each thawed puff pastry sheet. Mix the reserved sugar and cinnamon together and spread it over the buttered puff pastry side. Cut each puff pastry sheet into six even strips.

Step 6

Place a few slices of apple along each of the puff pastry strips and fold them over so that the apple slices are in between.

Step 7

Gently roll up the apple and pastry into a rose shape and place it in the prepared muffin cups. Repeat until all 12 roses are rolled up. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.

Step 8

Allow to cool for 10 minutes before removing from muffin pan and serving. Use a knife or an offset spatula if necessary to remove from the pan. Dust with powdered sugar before serving the beautiful puff pastry apple roses, if desired. This little gadget is perfect for dusting any baked good with powdered sugar.

What Type of Apples are Best to Use?

The best apples to use are red ones because of how pretty they look once they’re done. You can use your favorite baking apple. I’ve used Fuji apples in this recipe. Some other great varieties are Honeycrisps, Gala, and Pink Lady. Apple Puff Pastry Roses look best with red apples, but you can definitely try a Granny Smith if you prefer a more tart flavor.

How to Store Baked Puff Pastry Apple Roses

Apple roses are best served the same day but can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Reheat before serving by heating in a 300-degree oven for 8-10 minutes. Or reheat in the air fryer at 300 degrees for about 5 minutes. Reheating in the microwave is not recommended as the puff pastry will not be very crisp.

Tips, Tricks, and FAQs

  • The puff pastry package says that the pastry will thaw on the counter in 30 minutes. It may take a few minutes longer, so plan accordingly. Let it thaw until the pastry pieces unfold easily but don’t let it get too warm. Too warm will result in not enough “puff”.
  • In place of the cinnamon sugar, spread a light layer of apricot jam on the pastry slices. Blackberry jam is delicious as well. Try using apple butter to keep it in the apple theme. Just be sure it’s a thin layer of preserves so it doesn’t ooze out.
  • Use a pizza cutter to make cutting the pastry dough into strips easier.
  • It’s important to make sure you slice your apples into paper-thin slices so that when you roll them into the rose shape, it will roll up smoothly and easily.
  • A melon baller is the perfect tool to use to core your apples, but a spoon works, too.
  • If your roses are getting too brown before the apples are tender, lightly cover the muffin tray with aluminum foil.
  • This recipe is delicious with pear, too!
  • Make it even more “fall-like” by using pumpkin spice in place of the cinnamon.
  • Can’t find puff pastry? You can use refrigerated pie crust dough instead.
  • If your dough has gotten too warm while preparing the roses, pop your tray into the refrigerator for about 20 minutes before baking.
