We topped it with a simple powdered sugar glaze and chopped pecans for an even more decadent breakfast.

Whether you’re cooking for yourself, or your family, or hosting a brunch gathering with friends, this dish is sure to impress. So, fire up that griddle and get ready to savor the sweet bliss of this homemade French toast dish.

How do I stop my French Toast from getting too soggy?

If you find your french toast is a bit soggy after cooking, you may have soaked the bread slices too long or let it set too long before cooking. There’s a fine balance between allowing the bread to soak up that rich egg mixture and not letting it get too soggy before cooking. I prefer to just dip both sides of the bread quickly but making sure they are coated then immediately cook them on the preheated pan.

Milk Substitutions

I use either whole milk or 2% milk when I make French toast. Alternatively, half and half cream can be used. You can even use heavy cream, almond, or coconut milk. The different milks you may use can change the flavor slightly but will result in delicious French toast. In a pinch, I’ve used French vanilla coffee creamer and it was so good.

Pro tip: If you’re cooking a large batch of French toast, you can keep the cooked slices warm in a 200 degree oven for up to 30 minutes. Place a wire rack on a large baking sheet and place the French toast slices on the rack. Be sure not to leave it in the oven for too long or it will dry out.

How To Store And Reheat

Leftover slices can be stored in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 2 days. You can reheat on a hot griddle, or hot skillet, or place French toast slices in the toaster and toast! Reheat also in the Air Fryer. I do not recommend using the microwave to reheat the slices as they will become soggy.

Can You Freeze French Toast?

Yes, you can freeze cooked French toast by arranging the slices in a single layer on a baking sheet to freeze, and then transfer to a freezer bag and freeze for up to two months. Thaw and reheat as above.

Tips and Tricks

  • Any type of milk can be used, even plant-based like almond, oat, or soy.
  • Replace the milk with heavy cream or half and half for a creamier richer custard batter.
  • Be sure your griddle is hot and you allow the French toast to cook completely on both sides.
  • Make French toast sticks by slicing the bread into strips before dunking them into the custard mixture, then cook. Or, slice the toast when it’s finished cooking. Kids love to dunk French toast sticks into syrup.
  • For an eggless French toast, replace the eggs with cornstarch.
  • Substitute warm maple syrup for the glaze and add fresh berries or drizzle strawberry syrup over the slices.
