Soft and Chewy Chocolate Sugar Cookies
Soft and Chewy Chocolate Sugar Cookies are so easy to make. No rolling or cutting the dough! You will love them right out of the oven and even more after they cool.
I’ve been using the same classic sugar cookie recipe for years without fail. It’s a rolled and cut dough recipe but it is tried and true for over 25 years. I wanted to make chocolate sugar cookies but didn’t want to have to chill the dough and cut the cookies from it. That’s where this simple and easy recipe came into play. It’s a new family favorite cookie! That chocolate flavor really comes through.
Chocolate sugar cookies are my last recipe for #ChocolateWeek and I’m a bit sad that it’s over. However, there are so many new recipes from my foodie friends that I won’t be in short supply of chocolate anything! Follow that hashtag to see them all.

Chocolate Sugar Cookies
These chocolate cookies come out so fudgy and chewy that you’ll be making them often. They remind of a fudgy brownie cookie.
I didn’t add sprinkles to the cookies (I actually forgot) but I did roll the dough balls in sugar so that when they are baked they sugar gives the cookie a slight crunch and crisp edges before you hit the chewiness. Sprinkles would be great on these.
It’s the perfect Chocolate Sugar Cookie. Perfect for Valentine’s Day or any special occasion.
How to Store Chocolate Sugar Cookies
Store the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week or freeze for up to 3 months.
Ingredients
- all-purpose flour
- Dutch process unsweetened cocoa powder
- baking soda
- baking powder
- salt
- unsalted butter
- sugar
- large eggs
- vanilla extract
How to Make Chocolate Sugar Cookies
Step 1
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats. Set aside.
Step 2
In a medium bowl, combine the dry ingredients: flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
Step 3
In a large mixing bowl of a stand mixer, cream butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time and mix until well combined after each addition. Then add the vanilla extract and mix until combined.
A electric hand mixer can be used as well.
Step 4
Add the flour mixture and mix until the dough is well combined. The dough will be thick. Be sure to not overmix the dough. Use a wooden spoon to help it come together if it gets too thick.
Step 5
Using a 1 1/2 tablespoon sized cookie scoop, place dough balls of cookie dough on prepared cookie sheet.
Step 6
Roll each ball in the sugar to coat. Set the balls on the prepared baking sheets. Press down on the tops of the balls slightly.
Step 7
Bake time for the cookies is 8 – 10 minutes; be sure not to overbake. The cookies will be a little puffy when you take them out of the oven but will fall a little as they cool. Remove from the oven and allow to cool on baking sheets for 4-5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
