Air Fryer Sausage Balls
Air Fryer Sausage Balls are an easy and delicious appetizer and perfect for parties, game day snacks, or even a savory breakfast. These sausage balls are made with just three simple ingredients: sausage, cheese, and biscuit mix. The best part? They’re cooked in the air fryer, which means less mess and a faster cooking time.
I love hassle-free and easy appetizer recipes and these sausage bites are both of those. The air fryer gives them a golden, crispy exterior while keeping the inside tender and tasty. With minimal ingredients and maximum flavor, they’re a convenient and delicious option for any occasion.
These cheddar biscuit bites are just bites of deliciousness and the fact that they are made in the air fryer makes them even better. The cheesy morsels are a huge favorite of mine and I could them every day as I could these Everything Bagel Seasoning Mini Pigs in a Blanket.
Sometimes I will add the savory bites to our Easy Breakfast Charcuterie Board and they are a huge hit with everyone. You just can’t go wrong enjoying the cheesy meat bites with nearly any meal or as a tasty snack.
Air Fryer Sausage Balls
This air fryer recipe couldn’t be easier with only 3 ingredients! Combine the ingredients, and form the mixture into small, round bites, and air fryer. Done. See, easy! I bet you even have the items on hand to make them. If so, I suggest making a double batch to freeze some for another day.
They can also be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 days before air frying.
Timesaving Tips and Variations
- Use whatever type of ground sausage you like
- Any shredded cheese will work.
- Prepare as the directions indicate but do not bake – flash freeze and store in a freezer-safe container for up to a month. Cook as directed in the recipe.
- Oven method: Bake at 400 degrees for about 12-15 minutes.
- Great to make for breakfasts.
- Perfect for the holiday season, game day food, and brunches.
- Such an easy recipe to make a big batch to keep in the freezer.
The cheesy hearty appetizer bites are perfect to make to take potlucks and great to add to a brunch menu, too.
How to Freeze Sausage Balls
Once you have the mixture combined, roll into 1½ inch balls and place them on wax paper or parchment paper lined baking sheet. Once you have the sheet filled, place it in the freezer. When they are frozen, (about 2 hours) place them in a freezer bag or container and store them till ready to bake them. They can stay in the freezer for up to 2 months.
How do you cook the frozen sausage balls?
The frozen appetizer will pretty much cook up at the same time as they would fresh. In the air fryer at 390 degrees for about 10 minutes (turning over halfway through time) or until golden brown. Watch the cooking time as every air fryer cooks differently so keep an eye on them.
What do you serve with sausage balls?
If you’re serving them as an appetizer, spicy or honey mustard is delicious for dipping sauces. Just about any sauces you like would be great with these: buffalo sauce, sweet chili sauce, and even a creamy horseradish dip. For those who aren’t sausage fans, I suggest serving Grape Jelly Meatballs easily made in the Instant Pot. They would be a great addition to your snack table.
These are some of our favorite appetizers to serve with this recipe:
- Bacon Wrapped Jalapeno Poppers
- Pizza Potato Skins
- Caprese Skewers Recipe
- Air Fryer Mozzarella Sticks
- Easy Air Fryer Fried Ravioli
Having a brunch? these are great to serve and be sure to have some maple syrup or grape jelly for dipping.
Can you use any type of sausage?
Yes! While mild pork sausage is great for almost everyone, you may want to make some using a spicy blend. Italian seasoned or Turkey sausage works great as well. Use your favorite breakfast brand and they will turn out great.
What types of cheese can you use?
Shredded sharp cheddar works great but I’ve also used a pepper jack blend to give it a little zing. Monterey Jack or Colby Jack is delicious, too. Honestly, any shredded cheese you like works wonderfully.
