Crock Pot French Onion Chicken

Coming home to the smell of this Crock Pot French Onion Chicken is the best feeling. This dish makes your house smell amazing and delivers a seriously comforting meal. It’s a super simple slow cooker recipe with just five ingredients, tastes amazing, and works for any day of the week.

Crockpot meals are the bomb, right? So easy and they taste like you spent hours in the kitchen. This recipe is no exception with tender chicken, rich caramelized onions, and a seriously delicious broth. It’s one of those recipes you can serve for a family dinner or a special occasion.

A two-image collage showcasing Crock Pot French Onion Chicken. The top image shows the dish inside a crock pot, featuring tender chicken topped with caramelized onions and melted cheese. The bottom image displays a serving of the chicken on a plate with rice and a side of steamed broccoli, placed on a table with a yellow checkered napkin and utensils.

The best part about this dish is that it’s inspired by French onion soup. You’ve got those deeply caramelized onions, a rich, savory broth, and melty cheese – it’s a flavor explosion. Just like my Instant Pot French Onion Chicken recipe, the meat just soaks all the flavors and sauce up and gets crazy tender. If you love the classic onion soup, you’ll love this dish, too.

We love to serve this over rice, but garlic mashed potatoes and roasted green beans are yummy with this dish. This Brussels Sprouts Salad and some crusty bread would be another option for sides.

This recipe couldn’t be easier with minimal ingredients and steps to make, it’s the perfect hands-off dinner to make when time is short. You add all the ingredients in the crock-pot and let it do its thing. When the meat is done, add cheese and let it melt while you finish the side dishes.

The recipe takes a shortcut to using a canned French onion soup, you’re saving time by not having to caramelize the onions as you would with the pressure cooker recipe. I’d also like to point out that I thought this would be a bit on the salty side using the store-bought soups but it wasn’t at all! The flavors were balanced and delicious.

What Type of Cheese Do You Use?

I used Swiss but Provolone and Gryuere are also delicious cheeses to use. Mozzarella cheese is another good melty cheese to use.

Tips and Variations

  • You can substitute boneless, skinless chicken thighs for the breasts. Cooking time may be a little different.
  • Instead of serving over white rice, try cauliflower rice or a slice of toasted Texas toast on a plate and top with the chicken and onion gravy.
