easy grilled cheese hot dogs

If you’re a fan of grilled cheese sandwiches and hot dogs, then this is the recipe for you.  It’s not fancy, but it’s a fun twist on  two classic sandwiches.

My husband is always telling me we don’t have enough grilled hot dogs in our life.  On the flip side, we do have grilled cheese sandwiches often with a delicious bowl of tomato soup.  That combination, to me, is my very favorite classic meal.  Don’t get me wrong, I love a good grilled hot dog, just not as often as the husband does.

Creative grilled cheese recipes

I was thrilled when #OurFamilyTable Facebook group of food bloggers posted a “grilled cheese” event for Grilled Cheese Day (which is April 12!)  Bring on the creative sandwiches! This was the moment to combine both classics into one simple and delicious sandwich that both my hubby and I could enjoy.  You’ll find what my blogger friends created at the bottom of this post.

Making grilled cheese hot dogs

It’s an easy recipe, and by that I mean EASY.  The hardest part is deciding what cheese to use.  I went with a nacho and taco shredded blend of cheeses, mainly because that’s what I had on hand.  These days that’s the name of the game – use what you got.

My biggest tip for this recipe is to prep everything ahead of cooking the sandwiches.  This way everything you need is in front of you to assemble the sandwiches quickly.

Slice the hot dogs lengthwise, but do not cut all the way through. You want to them to lay open and flat.  You can either cook the hot dogs in a skillet (or grill pan) on the stove-top or cook over an outside grill.  I used the outside grill this time.

While the hot dogs are cooking, open each hot dog bun and flatten them using a rolling pin or your hands.  Be sure that you keep the top and bottoms of the buns together as you will be folding over the bread when you are grilling the sandwiches. Also add the garlic powder to the softened butter and mix well.

Once the hot dogs are finished cooking, slide them to a plate to keep warm.

Heat your skillet and butter the outside of the buns you flattened.

Buttered side down, add the buns to the heated skillet. Top with shredded cheese, the hot dog, and more cheese and sliced green onions.

Fold over the top half of the bun over the hot dog, pressing slightly.  Cover skillet and let cook until the cheese is melted.  Serve immediately.

Did you catch that the buns were coated with garlic butter? It’s a garlic toasted cheese sandwich with a hot dog in the middle!
