Slow Cooker Chicken and Gravy
This slow cooker chicken and gravy recipe is not only a family favorite, but the perfect comfort food. Easy crock pot recipe for tender chicken and delicious gravy is only a few ingredients away.
I don’t know about you, but I love comfort food. It just hits the spot some days. I know it’s not always healthy for you, but it sure is good tasting! That’s how I feel about this easy chicken and gravy recipe made in the slow cooker. Comfort food like this slow cooker mac and cheese, classic meatloaf in the crock pot, or this melt in your mouth pot roast just make my taste buds drool.
Today, I am sharing my family’s favorite chicken recipe along with my fellow #OurFamilyTable foodies favorites. Check the list out after this recipe.
Using packaged mixes and such is something I use on occasion, not the norm. This slow cooker chicken recipe use two packets of chicken gravy and a can of cream of mushroom soup. I do know that I could make both from scratch, but life is meant to be a little easier at times and less dishes to wash! It’s not bad to use these food items from time to time, just not make it a daily habit of cooking with them.
How to Cook Slow Cooker Chicken and Gravy
Add the chicken breasts to the bottom of the slow cooker. Season with 1/4 teaspoon pepper.
Whisk together the gravy packets, cream of mushroom soup, 1/4 teaspoon pepper, garlic, dried thyme, and water in a bowl. Pour over chicken. Cover and cook on low for 4-6 hours. Once the chicken is cooked, shred and serve with or over mashed potatoes, rice, stuffing, or noodles.
You can freeze any leftovers, too. Cool completely and seal tightly. Allow to thaw in the refrigerator overnight before reheating. Keep in freezer up to 3 months.
How to Shred Chicken
Easy peasy! Grab two forks and simply pull the chicken apart into small to medium pieces.
Variations on Chicken and Gravy
Over the years, I’ve changed up the recipe to suit our tastes or to give it a different flavor with other herbs like rosemary.
You can use another condensed cream soup like chicken or celery.
Add sliced mushrooms the last hour of cooking.
Add a chopped onion to the crock pot. Don’t have minced garlic? Use garlic powder instead.
Boneless chicken thighs will also be delicious in this recipe.
For a richer gravy, you can use chicken stock in place of water. I use unsalted stock so I can control the amount of salt in my recipes.
My gravy is thin, how do I thicken it?
In a small bowl, whisk 2 tablespoons of cold water and 2 tablespoons of cornstarch together. Once the cooking time is up and your chicken is cooked and shredded, add this mixture to the slow cooker. Cover and let cook for 1 – 15 minutes or until thickened.

Such an easy meal! I like that you could serve it over potatoes or rice or even make it into a hot chicken sandwich! Such a great fall or winter recipe.

There are few things more comforting than chicken with gravy. This looks delicious!
I made this for supper Sat night. Such a simple recipe and tasty. I will put this in my rotation. I like these kinds or recipes – just put everything in the crockpot. We had it with mashed potatoes.
We do the mashed potatoes, too and have this a couple of times a month.
