I always have so much turkey left over and I purposely buy a larger bird than we need for Thanksgiving. The Cuban sandwich, a beloved staple in both Cuban and Floridian cuisine, is traditionally made with ham, roasted pork, Swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard, all sandwiched between two slices of slightly sweet Cuban bread. While delicious, it’s not always the most portable or convenient snack. However, my Turkey Cuban Sandwich Puffs are both portable and an easy snack to make. By substituting turkey for pork, these puffs lighten the calorie load while still delivering the robust flavors you know and love.

Essential Tools to Make Turkey Cuban Sandwich Puffs

The items needed to create this delicious puff pastry sandwich are simple ones that you probably already have in your kitchen.

Ingredients

Most of the ingredients you will easily find in your grocery stores. The puff pastry can be found in the frozen foods aisles near the frozen desserts.

Directions

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line baking sheets with parchment paper. Set aside. Unfold pastry sheets and cut each sheet into 9 squares. Spread about ½ teaspoon of yellow mustard over the puff pastry.

Arrange turkey slices down the diagonal center of pastry squares. Then add one slice of ham to each square.

Next layer a pickle slice and some shredded Swiss cheese to the top of each pastry puff square.

Fold the two opposite corners of each square over the filling and press the edges to seal. Place on prepared baking sheet. Whisk the egg and water together in a small bowl. Using a pastry brush, brush each pastry puff with the egg wash. Bake 15-18 minutes, until golden brown.

Arrange the puffs on a platter or a serving dish and serve immediately while they’re still warm and crispy.
