American Flag Cake
One of my favorite things about this cake is how easy it is to make. You can bake your favorite cake from scratch, use a boxed cake mix, or even pick up a plain cake from the bakery and decorate it yourself. No matter which option you choose, the fresh berries and fluffy frosting transform it into a festive cake that’s perfect for any patriotic celebration.
Once the cake is baked and cooled, the fun part begins. Fresh strawberries and blueberries create the classic flag design, while piped frosting stars bring everything together. It’s a simple way to create a show-stopping centerpiece without spending all day in the kitchen.
Timesaving Tips and Variations
Whether you’re baking the cake from scratch or starting with a mix, a few helpful tips can make the process even smoother. These ideas can save time and help you create a cake that looks great and tastes delicious.
- Use my Jazzed Up White Cake recipe for a homemade taste with the convenience of a cake mix.
- Prep the strawberries and blueberries ahead of time and store them in the refrigerator until you’re ready to decorate.
- Frozen berries aren’t recommended as they contain too much moisture and will bleed into the frosted cake.
- Swap the canned frosting for The Best Cream Cheese Frosting.
- Let the cake cool completely before adding the frosting mixture so it stays light and fluffy.
- Bake the cake a day ahead and decorate it the day you plan to serve it.
This recipe is very forgiving, so don’t worry about making every berry perfectly lined up. Once the frosting stars are piped, everything comes together beautifully. The finished treat looks festive even with simple decorating techniques.

Ingredients for American Flag Cake
This recipe keeps things simple with a handful of easy-to-find ingredients. The fresh berries provide the patriotic colors while the frosting creates the signature stars.
- Yellow cake – The base of the recipe; homemade, boxed, or bakery-made.
- Vanilla frosting – Creates a sweet, creamy topping and decorative stars.
- Whipped topping – Lightens the frosting for a fluffier texture.
- Strawberries – Form the red stripes of the flag.
- Blueberries – Create the blue field in the corner.

Using fresh, ripe berries will give the best appearance and flavor. The combination of fruit and frosting keeps the cake light enough for warm-weather gatherings.
How to Make an American Flag Cake
Prepare the strawberries by removing the stems and cutting them in half. Beat the frosting until fluffy, then mix in the whipped topping.

Spread half of the frosting mixture over the cooled cake and chill for 1 hour. Arrange the strawberries and blueberries to create the stars-and-stripes pattern.

Using a piping bag, add frosting stars between the berries and refrigerate until ready to serve.
