Captain Crunch French Toast

Captain Crunch French Toast transforms ordinary French toast into something extraordinary. Soft, fluffy slices are coated in a crunchy, sweet cereal, creating a morning meal that’s just plain fun! It’s like taking a trip back to Saturday mornings as a kid, but even better. Of all the breakfast recipes you could try, this one will definitely bring a smile to your face.

Let’s be honest, sometimes breakfast can be a bit…routine. But with Captain Crunch French Toast, you create a unique twist on the traditional recipe. It’s a great choice for weekend brunches, special occasions, or a simple weekday breakfast.

Learning how to make French toast is probably one of the first cooking lessons my dad gave me and it’s been the basic recipe I’ve used to create this Cap’n Crunch French Toast and my favorite, Cinnamon Toast Crunch French Toast. My husband’s Easy Cinnamon French toast makes an appearance often when we have breakfast for dinner. It’s amazing how one simple lesson from my dad has sparked a love of all types of French toast dishes, including this simple French toast casserole with apples.

Creating this cereal-coated eggy bread starts with your standard egg custard batter, thick slices of bread, and crushed cereal. In place of the milk I would normally use, I am using heavy cream along with some vanilla and cinnamon to bring out more flavor from the cereal.

While I used the original flavor of the cereal, you can use any variety. I do love using the Berry-flavored or the peanut butter one, too. Give them all a try and see which is your favorite. Top the skillet-baked slices with fresh fruit, and maple syrup, or even drizzle some melted peanut butter over them.

Timesaving Tips and Variations

These tips and variations will help you make this recipe even better.

  • Make a double batch of French toast and freeze the extras. Simply reheat in a toaster oven or lightly in a skillet.
  • Try using another of your favorite cereals Froot Loops or Trix to coat the bread.
  • Use your choice of milk product. Try almond milk for a bit of a nutty flavor.
  • Garnish your French toast with fresh berries, powdered sugar, or a dollop of whipped cream for a beautiful presentation.
  • Get creative with toppings! Try chopped nuts, sliced bananas, or even a spoonful of jam.
  • Make this recipe gluten-free by using gluten-free bread and cereal.

These tips and tricks will make your breakfast game stronger, helping you make it faster, easier, and more flavorful.

Who knew cereal could make breakfast so much more exciting? This recipe is a fun twist on a classic recipe.

What’s the best bread to use for French Toast?

Day-old or slightly stale bread is ideal for preventing sogginess, allowing it to soak up the custard perfectly. While richer breads like Texas toast, brioche, and challah create a more decadent French toast, a simple loaf of sliced sandwich bread is convenient and most always available in pantries. Gluten-free bread can also be used.

What to serve with French Toast?

You can serve pretty much anything you would have on your breakfast or brunch menu. I like to have crispy bacon or sausage with mine. Fresh fruit is always an option in my house along with scrambled eggs. Here are a few more heartier options:

Your options are really endless and I always say serve what you love, even if it’s not a traditional breakfast recipe.

Instructions

  • Put the cereal in the ziplock bag and close. Crush it with a rolling pin or your hands. You want to still have some texture to it. Pour into a medium shallow bowl.
  • In another medium shallow bowl, whisk the eggs, cream, vanilla, sugar, and cinnamon.
  • Grab a slice of bread and dip it into the egg mixture, do not soak it or it will be too wet to fully cook. Dip long enough to moisten both sides. Immediately place it in the bowl the cereal crumbs and coat both sides. Continue this process with the other five slices of bread.
  • Melt the butter on the griddle over medium high heat. Place coated slices of bread onto pan and cook for about 6 – 8 minutes, flipping them halfway through. You want the outside to be golden brown and crispy.
Serve with maple syrup, fresh fruit, or your favorite toppings.
