We love these mini rolls with their melty cheese and ham, and that buttery topping with poppy seeds is the best part. They’re a part of our game day foods along with my slow cooker meatball sliders and some loaded sheet pan nachos. Football is on all day on Sundays and we need munchies that feed a crowd!

Ham and Cheese Sliders

The magic of these ham and cheese sliders begins with soft, fluffy mini buns. Hawaiian rolls are a popular choice for their slight sweetness, which pairs beautifully with the salty ham and buttery sauce that bakes into the buns. It’s super quick to assemble the sandwiches and then the oven does the hard part of baking them until they are golden brown. We do serve these as part of our game day menu, but a fruit salad recipe would be a great side to have with them for dinner.

Can You Make Ham and Cheese Sliders Ahead of Time?

You can prepare the sliders ahead of time, but don’t pour the butter mixture over the buns until you are ready to bake them. Store the premade sandwiches in the refrigerator until ready to bake.

Timesaving Tips and Variations

These mini sandwiches are incredibly versatile, and easily adapted to suit any dietary preference or occasion.

  • Don’t skimp on the sauce, it’s what will make the rolls golden brown and keep them from drying out.
  • Adding a bit of Worcestershire sauce is a great idea.
  • Add thinly sliced pickles for tang or some caramelized onions for sweetness.
  • These are a fantastic way to repurpose holiday ham or any leftover meats.
  • Pair with a side dish like French fries, potato chips, or a fresh salad.
  • Experiment with different cheeses, such as Gruyère or fontina, or add a touch of spice with jalapeño peppers.
  • Try a tangy barbecue sauce or a sweet and spicy glaze.
  • Use salami, pepperoni, and provolone cheese, then season the sauce mixture with Italian herbs like oregano and basil.
  • Substitute roasted vegetables like zucchini, mushrooms, and bell peppers for the ham and pair them with a hearty cheese like feta or mozzarella.

Whether you’re a meat-lover or a vegetarian, you can create mini sandwiches that satisfy your cravings.

Do I Have to Use Hawaiian Rolls?

No, you don’t have to use the mini Hawaiian Rolls. You can use regular white bread slider buns or even potato bread mini dinner buns. If you’re a fan of Preztel buns, they make a mini version of those, and would be fun for this recipe.
