I needed a quick dinner one night as it was getting late this grilled ham kabobs recipe was perfect.  Simple ingredients that I always have on hand and that everyone likes.  Win-Win!

This is a very easy recipe to make for dinner or if you’re feeding a crowd. Because the ham is already cooked, you only need to grill the skewers until they’re heated and the vegetables are softened.

Grilled Hawaiian Ham Skewers

This is a great recipe to use leftover ham in, but if you don’t, simply use a ham steak from the grocery store. Because this recipe doesn’t use any raw ingredients, it’s perfect to put together at the last minute.

The sweet and sour sauce just needs heated up on the stove and then brushed over the assembled kabobs before grilling. No hours of marinating are needed. Another benefit of this recipe is that you can brush the sauce over the skewers as they are cooking and serve the sweet and sour sauce with the meal.

The combination of the flavorful ham, juicy pineapple, and crunchy grilled vegetables glazed with that tangy pineapple sauce makes for a delicious meal.

What to Serve with these Ham and Pineapple Skewers

I like to serve the ham and pineapple skewers over a bed of rice with a few slices of grilled maple glazed pineapple but this macaroni salad would also be yummy to serve with it. Baked beans are always a good side dish to make for kabobs.

Tips to Make These Grilled Ham Skewers:

  • If you are using wooden skewers, soak them for at least 30 minutes before assembling and grilling the kabobs. Otherwise, the wooden skewers will burn and catch fire. I prefer to use metal skewers when making kabob recipes.
  • If you do not have a grill or cannot grill outside, this indoor grill is great OR you can broil the skewers in the oven.
  • Be sure all of your ingredients are cut about the same size so they will cook evenly. Plus, kabobs are bite-sized foods. One-inch pieces are the perfect size.
  • The recipe calls for unsweetened pineapple juice but you don’t have to buy that item separately. I used fresh pineapple and there was enough of the natural juices in the container to use in this recipe.
  • Alternatively, you can (and I have) use canned pineapple chunks in natural juices and use that juice.
  • You can choose to use whatever kind of peppers you prefer. Even jalapenos would be great if you want a bit of a kick.
  • Add mushrooms or zucchini chunks to the skewers for more vegetables.
  • If you like add some shrimp to the skewers. Shrimp cooks pretty fast in this recipe and it would be a delicious addition. I added shrimp to these grilled sausage and pineapple skewers and everyone loved them.

🥣Equipment

📃Ingredients

  • ⅔ cup unsweetened pineapple juice
  • ½ cup ketchup
  • 4 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons light brown sugar
  • 1 ham steak ( or leftover ham chunks)
  • 1 red onion
  • 2 bell peppers (I used red and green)
  • ½ of a fresh pineapple, peeled and cored

Directions

Make the pineapple grilling sauce by whisking together the pineapple juice, ketchup, soy sauce, garlic cloves, and brown sugar in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer for at least about 10 minutes. Then allow to cool before use (about 10 minutes).

Sauce for the Hawaiian Ham Skewers - process

While the sauce is cooling, assemble the skewers. Remember, if you’re using wooden skewers, soak them for 30 minutes BEFORE assembling and grilling the kabobs. This will keep the wooden skewers from burning and catching your food on fire. I like to use metal skewers as I have a tendency to forget to soak the wooden ones.

There is really no wrong way to assemble the skewers. I like to alternate the ingredients on the skewers and place them on a sheet pan.  Some people like to make all meat skewers and all veggie ones. You do you.

Hawaiian Ham Skewers assembled and ready to grill- process

Preheat your grill to medium-high. Once the kabobs are assembled, brush them with half of the cooled sauce, turning each skewer over to get all sides. Set the remaining sauce aside.

Grilling sauce poured and brushed over ham skewers - process

Place skewers on the grill and use the drippings in the pan to brush over the skewers once more. Grill each side of the skewers for about 5 minutes, or until all ingredients have been heated through and have nice grill marks. As you are turning the kabobs, brush more of the sauce over them. Use any remaining sauce to serve with the skewers. Also, if you want to grill pineapple slices, place them on the grill with the kabobs. Brush some of the sauce over them and heat on both sides for a few minutes each.

  1. That sounds delicious! I have ham steak on the menu for this week too so we might just have to try this instead. Pinned.

  3. This reminds me of a skewered version of something my mom used to make when I was a kid! I can’t wait to try it.
